About Model United Nations
Model United Nations known as MUN, is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy, formal sessions on current political, social and economic issues and the United Nations agenda. The participants role-play as diplomats representing a country or NGO in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly. Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, discuss, debate, consult, and then develop solutions to ongoing global issues.
About Pamir International Model United Nations
Afghan youth are rarely given equal opportunities to develop and improve their skills and spark a positive change. Although they have the potential to play an important role in the future of their communities, they are marginalized from important decision-making processes and they are lacking diplomacy, debating and lobbying skills.
Youth Thinkers’ Society pioneered Model UN conferences by organizing the first edition of Pamir International MUN for the very first time in Afghanistan for Afghan youth and provided them a platform to learn and practice international relations/policy, diplomacy, tolerance, negotiation, debating, critical thinking, and public speaking. PIMUN is organized annually in Kabul city and simulate various UN committees with new initiatives and new topics.
PIMUN-ICC 2019
PIMUN; ICC was organized to glorify the international women’s day (IWD) and build on the localization of SDGs in Afghanistan. PIMUN; Inter-Collegiate Conference was held at Canadian Embassy in Kabul on 8th and 9th, March 2019, in which 60 students from various universities and other educational institutes participated. PIMUN; ICC was led and organized by female members of Youth Thinkers’ Society.
The main discussion of conference was around UN Security Council Resolutions 1325 & 2250 which is about ‘Women, Youth, Peace and, Security”. During the conference, the team also worked to promote the SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 5: Gender Equality, SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, SDG 16; Peace, justice and strong institution, and #HeForShe.
Objectives:
Our main goals from PIMUN ICC were:
· To Celebrate International Women’s Day;
· To familiarize the youth the working of UN;
· Promoting youth skills with global youth discussions, in order to address world problems and develop solutions;
· Developing youth skills on leadership, stress management, technology, personality making and peace building process for the world;
· To foster youth action towards implementation of ideas brought forward by the young people for the benefit of societies.
This conference simulated following committees:
· United Nations Security Council (UNSC)
· United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC)
· United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN WOMEN)
Closing Program:
The closing ceremony of the conference was attended by Dr. Habiba Sarabi (Advisor to the Chief Executive of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan), Ms. Aleta Miller (UNWOMEN), Zohra Yosuf (Advisor the First Lady of Afghanistan), Nahid Sarabi the Deputy Minister for Policy of Minister of Finance. The Best Delegate and best resolution paper awards were distributed. All the participants received their participation certificates. Chairing team of committee selected the participants who performed very well and were given trophies and awards.
